Odesa: SBU uncovers telephone operator on collaboration with Russia’s intelligence services
SBU officers under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office exposed an international telephone operator in Odesa on collaboration with the Russian intelligence services.
The law enforcers established that the owner of a company (a citizen of Russia) instructed the staff to route the traffic from the temporarily occupied territories of Lugansk region to the networks of Russian mobile operators. For this, a special software and hardware telecommunication complex was used.
The SBU operatives documented that this illegal channel provided free communication for the LNR militants between themselves and with the Russian supervisers. The Russian intelligence services controlled the personal data and telephone conversations of the Ukrainian citizens and organizations that used the “services” of this operator.
During the searches at the operator’s office, technical premises and residence, the SBU officers exposed special telecommunication equipment for illegal traffic routing, worth over UAH 500,000 (USD 17,857). The law enforcers seized correspondence and documents confirming provision of telephone services to the LNR representatives and cooperation with Russia’s FSB.
The Russian citizen was served a notice of suspicion in assisting the terrorist activity in the framework of the criminal proceedings initiated under Part 1 Article 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Measure of restraint in the form of custody was enforced by the court.
The urgent investigative and operative actions are under way.
