SBU finally becomes effective mechanism of state and civil security protection - President congratulates with 26th anniversary of SBU

“Each of the 26 years of SBU operating is important and special. But, it's nothing to discuss that the last four years were the most important, the most complicated, the most critical. The muscles that the SBU has grown over the years has inspired fear to the enemies and confidence in Ukrainian society. The SBU has finally become an effective mechanism of the state and civil security protection,” - said the President Petro Poroshenko during the solemn event on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the SBU establishment.

The Head of State remarked that the current anniversary of the SBU coincided with the process of reformatting of the ATO. “The ATO has become for you not just a school of life, but life itself. I want to remind you that the first people who gave their lives were the SBU officers in 2014. Forever, in the ranks of the SBU, there would be officers who sacrificed their lives for Ukraine,” said Petro Poroshenko.

The attendants honored with a minute of silence the SBU officers who gave their lives, protecting Ukraine.

The President also stressed that the SBU's contribution to the ATO is hard to underestimate, as it is difficult to underestimate the struggle of the SBU with the Russian aggressor. “There are hundreds of exposed informants and hundreds of detained militants, dozens of localized sabotage and prevented attacks on your account. The dozens of terrorist acts and sabotage were stopped by the SBU only during the last year, "he said.

According to his words, the units of the Centre for Special Operations "Alpha" conducted over 7,000 special, operative and combat operations in the area of ATO, including preventing of the penetration of sabotage and reconnaissance groups into the country.  The SBU detained 591 people, involved in terrorist activities, gathering intelligence data and assisting the militants and the Russian occupiers.

"Dozens of separatists have been exposed and brought to justice. Those who encroached on the integrity of our country, participated in the so-called illegal referendum, shook the situation in Donbas, Kharkiv, Odesa, the Dnipro, Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. The verdict was imposed concerning 13 traitors under the Article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine “State treason” only in 2017”, - stated the President.

He also noted that in the framework of counteraction to hostile propaganda Ukraine was forbidden for almost 100 “specific” citizens of Russia. "These are the spiritual descendants of Gebbels, who participated in the information war against Ukraine, playing the roles of journalists, bloggers, and experts. 36 verdicts were took by the courts for committing crimes stipulated by Article 109 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine concerning owners and administrators of the communities and pages VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, and even Facebook. These are "actions aimed at forcible change or overthrow of the constitutional order or the takeover of government," the Head of State remarked.

Petro Poroshenko also emphasized that the work of the SBU on combating the economic crimes, first of all, was aimed at shutting down the financial flows of terrorism sponsoring. "In 2017, The convictions came into legal force concerning 11 offenders involved in terrorism financing. And I can say that the legal action initiated in the international courts against the Russia for violating the Convention on combating the financing of terrorism are also generally based on the SBU materials”, he said.

At the same time, the Head of State emphasized: "Changes related to the reformatting of the ATO in any way don’t mean reducing the role of the SBU in the region. The Law on the reintegration of Donbas establishes the special procedure of implementation of measures on providing the security, repression and deterrence of the Russian aggression. It would help to concentrate the efforts on the priority component of the SBU work - on the CI, reinforcing it not only in the contact line, but also strengthening the CI activities throughout the territory of Ukraine. "

“The strengthening is important especially now, when we see that the fewer shots are in the combat zone, the greater the enemy's activity in the rear. The aggressor is trying to displace the epicentre of the hybrid war as the closest to the heart of Ukraine. The heart is our ancient capital, beautiful Kyiv, "said Petro Poroshenko.

He reminded that the SBU has conducted two large-scale operations, which "are worth of pages in textbooks for future special servicemen during the recent months". At first, the connection of the so-called protest camp under the Verkhovna Rada with the little Russian political emigration in Russia, which sits under the cover of the FSB, was brilliantly uncovered and legally documented. And it is important that the convincing evidence was received and the financial channel between the Dnipro and the Moscow River was shut down, where they transported these “30 pieces of silver,” the President said.

“Dear Chairman, it is more important, and for this, we would thank You and all staff - you have professionally exposed the enemy nest, which was preparing the large-scale attacks with a number of victims in Kyiv. They called it “controlled chaos”, preparing the takeover of government, the rebellion in Ukraine in the interests of the Russia,” the Head of State emphasized.

“Such SBU achievements became possible only as a result of the systemic changes that gradually strengthened the functional capabilities of the SBU on protecting the interests of the citizens and the state from external and internal threats,” the President concluded.

The Head of State also presented the state awards to the SBU staff for the personal merits in strengthening the national security, courage, exemplary performing of the official duty and on the occasion of the Day of the SBU.
