SBU is open to discussion on reform - Serhiy Pun

The Security Service of Ukraine demonstrates a high level of openness, readiness for public discussion on reform issues and is expected to take into account expert comments that will have a positive impact on the activities of the special service.

This was stated by Deputy Head of the SBU Reform Serhiy Pun during  on-line discussion on security sector reform organized by the Center for Civil Liberties.

"As a person who works with partners from other EU and NATO special services on a daily basis, I would say that none of them is so open when it comes to their reform. I think this is a great advantage of Ukrainian society, which shows openness to such discussions, “ - said Serhiy Pun.

He stressed that the profile committee of the Verkhovna Rada is currently finalizing the draft law on the Security Service of Ukraine, where a wide-ranging working group has been set up. Deputies also joined representatives of the SBU to participate in it.

According to Serhiy Pun, the law on the Security Service of Ukraine is a legal framework that defines the fundamentals: status, tasks, functions and tools that the Service will use in the future. At the same time, in his view, the reform should combine effective tools for countering threats and democratic control over the activities of the Service.

We recall that the draft law "On the Security Service of Ukraine" was submitted by the President to the Parliament on March 10. The document contains system innovations that will allow the Ukrainian special service to take things to the next level in its activities. In May, the Verkhovna Rada considered the bill and sent it for a second reading. Currently, work on the text of the bill is ongoing on the basis of the profile committee of the Verkhovna Rada with the involvement of expert representatives from international partners and the public sector.
