SBU found pictures stolen from the Dutch Museum (video)

The SBU officers found four pictures of the Dutch painters of XVII-XVIII century, which were stolen in 2005 from the museum in Hoorn the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The SBU Head Vasyl Hrytsak together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands informed about this during joint briefing.    

After receiving of the correspondent request from the Dutch law-enforcers, the SBU conducted massive work on the check of information on the pictures location in Ukraine. “The special operation in ten regions of Ukraine lasted four months”, Vasyl Hratsak stressed. At first the law-enforcers established the location of two pictures, which were stolen from the museum. The pieces of art were detected by the SBU a week before the referendum on Ukraine-EU Association support in the Netherlands. According to the SBU Head, disclosure of this information could have influenced the voting results, but could also have knocked the operation. The SBU detected two more pictures just the day of the briefing.

The SBU officers established that the steal was organized by one of the international criminal groups, which included natives of Donbas. The operation on the pictures search in Ukraine is still under way, the SBU Head assured.

“I thank the SBU and the Head Vasyl Hrytsak for four found pictures from the Netherlands. Ukraine kept the promise – intensively searched and detected first pictures”, - Pavlo Klimkin underlined.

According to the international norms all the pictures will be returned to the Dutch Museum.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ukraine Kees Klompenhouwer thanked the SBU for the effective work and noted importance of international cooperation of the law-enforcers at the investigation of the heinous crime.

In total twenty-four pictures were stolen from the museum in Hoornand forty silver antiquities to the value of EUR 10,000,000.

Urgent operational and investigative actions for prosecution of all persons, involved into stealing and selling of the art pieces are under way.
