Vinnytsia city: SBU detains pseudo Presidential Adviser for extortion UAH 1 million from businessman

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained in Vinnytsia city a police officer representing himself as an Adviser to the President of Ukraine on extortion of more than UAH 1,100,000 (USD 40,741) from a local businessman.

Allegedly, the former colonel of police had a certificate of an employee of the President’s Office. The suspect together with two accomplices threatened the businessman physical violence and property destruction if he doesn’t pay non-existent debt. For this amount, ex-officer also promised him unimpeded business. In the context of "solidarity" he referred to ties with officials of the Office of the President. Additionally, the accomplices were represented themselves as the SBU general and a member of the anti-corruption public organization.

Law enforcement officers detained three perpetrators in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine on receiving the entire amount of the"debt".

In the framework of the criminal proceedings under Part 4 Art. 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the issue of serving the offenders suspicion notices and choosing a preventive measure is being decided.

Investigations to identify other persons possibly involved in the fraud are underway.

The operation was conducted jointly with the Territorial Administration of the State Bureau of Investigation in Khmelnitskyi city under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of Vinnytsia region.
