Zakarpattia region: SBU uncovers illegal gravel mining for USD 245,000
The Security Service of Ukraine in Uzhhorod district uncovered illegal extraction of gravel-sand mixture under the guise of creating an artificial lake in the water protection zone of the river Uzh. This activity could have a negative impact on the hydrological condition of the river artery.
Allegedly, illegal mining was organized by a local businessman. He extracted minerals without permits on six plots of land with a total area of over 10 hectares. Subsequently, the suspect sold the mixture to other businessmen in the region.
The engineering and ecological examination initiated by SBU confirmed the fact of extraction of 8,000 cubic meters of minerals. The illegal activity of the suspect caused losses to the state in the amount of more than UAH 6,600,000 (USD 245,000).
During the investigation, law enforcement officers found trucks and excavators involved in illegal work. The issue of seizing the property belonging to the businessman is being solved.
The businessman is served a notice of suspicion of the crime under Part 4 Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The operation was conducted jointly with police investigators and environmental inspection under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office of Zakarpattia region.
